Did you know?
How Chronic Pain affects a person at home
Living day-to-day with chronic pain often means that the simple comforts of home can become sources of frustration, fatigue and adjustment. Tasks that once felt easy (such as getting out of bed in the morning, doing household chores, preparing meals or walking around the garden) can require far more effort, rest and support. The pain may fluctuate, meaning one day a person feels able to join in, the next they may need to postpone, cancel or rely more heavily on others.
For family members and loved ones the impact is often two-fold. On one hand there is the caring role: offering support, adapting routines, assisting with mobility or self-care, managing medication or rest breaks. On the other hand there is the emotional and relational shift: the person in pain may feel frustrated, guilty, or less able to contribute as they once did; family and friends may feel the weight of responsibility, the need to protect and adjust, the changes to social life, work commitments or personal time.
Home may need tweaking: furniture repositioned, mobility aids introduced, lighting improved, quieter spaces created. The fact that chronic pain is often invisible, fluctuating and unpredictable adds another layer of complexity where support that is responsive, reliable and centred on the person (and their family) makes a real difference in turning a house into a home that works.

What is Chronic Pain?
Chronic pain is pain that continues or recurs for more than three months and persists beyond the usual time for tissue healing.
It may arise from an underlying condition (such as arthritis, nerve damage or musculoskeletal issues), or sometimes without a clear cause. The ongoing nature of this pain means it often affects movement, sleep, mood, and social participation, and may require long-term management rather than a simple cure.
How we support people with Chronic Pain

At Horizons Homecare we understand that chronic pain isn’t just a symptom to be managed, it affects every part of a person’s life. It can affect independence, mood, relationships, routines, home comfort. We begin by partnering with the person and their loved ones to build a care plan that reflects their reality, their home, and what matters most to them.
Our skilled carers are familiar with the complexities of chronic pain: they work at the pace of the individual, help adapt the home environment (for example supporting safe mobility, making simple practical changes, assisting with rest-intervals or activity modification), coordinate with health professionals where needed (with consent), and always keep communication open with both the person and the family. We support meaningful daily routines: helping with chosen activities, ensuring comfort, promoting hydration, rest and gentle movement rather than simply focusing on tasks. We also recognise the emotional and social side of chronic pain: our carers act with empathy, offering a familiar, consistent face, helping people stay connected, and supporting families in their role so they don’t feel alone. Because we know the nature of chronic pain may evolve, our service is flexible: regular review, adaptation of care plans, ongoing dialogue, and a commitment to maintaining home as a place of dignity and genuine living.

Our core values...
The foundation of our success
Kindness
We believe that being truly kind isn't a skill, and it certainly isn't something you can learn. Being kind by nature is who you are!
Thats why we only employ, train and nurture those who are truly kind and caring towards other people. Not only does this belief form our recruitment process and decisions, it has become one of the foundations of our business.
Punctuality
We firmly believe that routines are what keep us as people, independent. Why should that change just because you require support at home?
Punctuality is another foundation of our business, and it means that when you become a client of Horizons, you will always know when your care team will be arriving. No more care workers being late, and no more missed visits.
Continuity
Something we have always been very eager to improve is the quite possibly the biggest 'flaw' in social care services today. Continuity...
After all, we wouldn't want our loved ones seeing a different person at every care visit, so why should you have to put up with it?
This is why you will have your very own team of care workers that really understand you and your routines. Your history, your family and your hobbies.
Family
The word family, encapsulates everything that we stand for, but unlike others who say they are a family run company. We truly are!
From our HCAs to our clients, we are all one family striving for better outcomes and happier lives. This is why family is not only a core value, but the bricks and mortar we build the foundations on.
