In the UK about six people are diagnosed with motor neurone disease (MND) each day
Did you know?
How MND affects people at home
Living with MND in a home environment brings profound changes for the person and everyone around them. In early stages a person might notice weakness in a limb, slurred speech or swallowing challenges. Over time, the effects often spread and everyday activities such as preparing meals, moving around the home, dressing, using the stairs or even breathing can become progressively harder.
For families and loved ones the impact is significant. As roles shift, someone may move from partner/friend to carer. Home life needs to adapt and rooms may require equipment so conversations about future care become necessary, and routines may be disrupted. Emotionally there can be frustration, loss of expectation, anxiety, and a desire to maintain dignity and independence despite growing dependency.
Because MND can progress unpredictably, many families speak of the “always changing” nature of the condition rather than a steady slope. This uncertainty makes planning and support all the more important. Having a home-care partner who understands the condition, ensures consistent support and anticipates change can help people stay at home for longer in safer, more comfortable ways.

What is Motor Neurone Disease (MND)?
Motor neurone disease (MND) is a progressive neurological condition in which the nerve cells (motor neurones) in the brain and spinal cord gradually fail to transmit signals to the muscles they control.
As this happens, the muscles weaken, become stiff or waste away, and over time individuals may lose the ability to walk, talk, swallow or breathe.
The condition affects each person differently. the speed of progression, which muscles are affected first, and how non-motor symptoms (such as thinking or behaviour changes) emerge can vary widely.
There is currently no cure for MND, so the focus is on managing symptoms, maximising quality of life and supporting the person and their family through the change.
How we support people with MND

At Horizons Homecare we appreciate how MND impacts every dimension of life and how vital it is to have responsive, compassionate support at home. Our aim is to help people live with dignity, connection and as much independence as possible for as long as possible.
We assign care teams who know the condition and can pick up early signs of change. whether that’s new fatigue, a swallowing challenge, issue with mobility or a change in mood or cognition. Care plans are developed in close collaboration with the person and their family so home routines, environment and preferences are respected. We coordinate with community and neurological teams, help with equipment or home adaptations, support safe transfers, aid nutrition and hydration, and engage the person in meaningful activity rather than only basic tasks.
We recognise that the person is more than their diagnosis so we monitor and respond to physical, emotional and social needs. Families are given regular communication, flexibility and guidance as change occurs. Our focus is not just reacting to crisis, but planning ahead so that transitions are smoother and home remains the place of choice.
In this way Horizons Homecare helps individuals with MND and their loved ones live together more confidently, safely and comfortably in their own homes.
Three simple steps to using Horizons Homecare
1. Get in touch with us
Have a no obligation, confidential, conversation with one of our care experts to discuss your needs. We will ask questions about you or your loved ones and hopefully we will book the next stage.
Our core values...
The foundation of our success
Kindness
We believe that being truly kind isn't a skill, and it certainly isn't something you can learn. Being kind by nature is who you are!
Thats why we only employ, train and nurture those who are truly kind and caring towards other people. Not only does this belief form our recruitment process and decisions, it has become one of the foundations of our business.
Punctuality
We firmly believe that routines are what keep us as people, independent. Why should that change just because you require support at home?
Punctuality is another foundation of our business, and it means that when you become a client of Horizons, you will always know when your care team will be arriving. No more care workers being late, and no more missed visits.
Continuity
Something we have always been very eager to improve is the quite possibly the biggest 'flaw' in social care services today. Continuity...
After all, we wouldn't want our loved ones seeing a different person at every care visit, so why should you have to put up with it?
This is why you will have your very own team of care workers that really understand you and your routines. Your history, your family and your hobbies.
Family
The word family, encapsulates everything that we stand for, but unlike others who say they are a family run company. We truly are!
From our HCAs to our clients, we are all one family striving for better outcomes and happier lives. This is why family is not only a core value, but the bricks and mortar we build the foundations on.
