In the UK more than 150,000 people are living with Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
Did you know?
How MS affects people at home
Living with MS in one’s own home brings a mix of practical, emotional and relational challenges. Over time a person may find previously simple tasks. Such as getting dressed, walking around the house, accessing the bathroom, or preparing meals which become more difficult or require extra support. Fatigue can make even known routines unpredictable.
The home environment may need adaptation (for example hand-rails, mobility aids, better lighting, accessible bathrooms) and the person may need to rely increasingly on others.
For families and loved ones this means that roles can shift: the person diagnosed may feel a loss of independence or identity, while family members or friends may take on caring responsibilities, often balancing these with their own lives, work, social time and health.
Because MS often fluctuates and can have periods of relapse or change, planning ahead is tricky and the support needs may evolve. Staying at home can be hugely beneficial for emotional well-being and continuity of life, but it also places demands on the household, and on the care network around the person. Good, responsive in-home care can help the person with MS and their family navigate these changes, preserve dignity and keep the home as a place of safety and meaning.

What is Multiple Sclerosis (MS)?
Multiple Sclerosis is a long-term condition affecting the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord). In MS the insulating covering of nerve fibres (myelin) becomes damaged, which disrupts the messages sent between the brain and the rest of the body.
Symptoms vary widely but often include fatigue, problems with movement or walking, numbness or tingling, vision issues, and changes in thinking or mood. The course of MS is unpredictable: some people live many years with mild symptoms, others face faster progression. While there is no cure currently, treatments, lifestyle support and therapy aim to slow the condition and improve life at home.
How we support people with MS

At Horizons Homecare we recognise that living with MS is about much more than managing physical symptoms. It’s about supporting independence, dignity, identity and relationships especially in their own home. We begin by working with the person and their family to develop a care plan that respects their routines, home space, aspirations and preferences.
Our carers are trained to understand the nature of MS and how to support movement and mobility safely, to assist when fatigue or sensory issues are present, and to monitor for changes in the person’s condition or environment that might signal a need for review or change. We can help with medication, coordinate with community and therapy teams (with permission), and assist with home adaptations or equipment where needed. Importantly we support meaningful activity, social connection and the person’s goals rather than only focusing on the tasks of care.
We understand that MS can bring cognitive, emotional or sensory symptoms as well as physical ones, so our approach stays holistic. We keep families informed, flexible and supported because caring changes the lives of everyone in the household. As the person’s needs evolve, so does our service. Our aim is not just to respond to change but to anticipate and reduce any possibility of crisis transitions, enabling the person with MS and their loved ones to live together in the home with confidence, comfort and control.

Our core values...
The foundation of our success
Kindness
We believe that being truly kind isn't a skill, and it certainly isn't something you can learn. Being kind by nature is who you are!
Thats why we only employ, train and nurture those who are truly kind and caring towards other people. Not only does this belief form our recruitment process and decisions, it has become one of the foundations of our business.
Punctuality
We firmly believe that routines are what keep us as people, independent. Why should that change just because you require support at home?
Punctuality is another foundation of our business, and it means that when you become a client of Horizons, you will always know when your care team will be arriving. No more care workers being late, and no more missed visits.
Continuity
Something we have always been very eager to improve is the quite possibly the biggest 'flaw' in social care services today. Continuity...
After all, we wouldn't want our loved ones seeing a different person at every care visit, so why should you have to put up with it?
This is why you will have your very own team of care workers that really understand you and your routines. Your history, your family and your hobbies.
Family
The word family, encapsulates everything that we stand for, but unlike others who say they are a family run company. We truly are!
From our HCAs to our clients, we are all one family striving for better outcomes and happier lives. This is why family is not only a core value, but the bricks and mortar we build the foundations on.
