Did you know?

How Parkinsons affects people at home

Living with Parkinson’s at home presents many challenges, both for the person diagnosed and for their family, supporters or unpaid carers. Some of the main ways the condition can affect day-to-day life include:

  • Reduced mobility, increased risk of falls, needing help to move safely around the home, get up, sit down, walk, use the stairs.

  • Difficulty with daily activities: dressing, washing, eating, cooking, toileting. As symptoms progress, the need for assistance increases.

  • Medication management: many people with Parkinson’s have complex drug regimens and timing is critical. Missed or late doses may lead to symptom fluctuations.

  • Non-motor symptoms: sleep disturbances, fatigue, depression or anxiety, cognitive changes and difficulties in speech or swallowing can all place additional strain on both the person and their loved ones.

  • Emotional and relational impact: The diagnosis can bring feelings of loss (of former abilities, roles, independence), uncertainty about the future. Family members may shift into caring roles which affect their own life, health and work. For example, a study found the majority of caregivers (70 %) were the spouse, mean age about 62 years.

  • Home life changes: The living environment may need adaptation (equipment, grab-rails, telecare, assistive technology) to maintain safety and independence. Research shows that for people living with Parkinson’s and receiving formal support, home-care or social-care plays a key part.
For families it means often having to plan, coordinate, adapt: making the home safe, managing visits by care professionals, liaising with health services, possibly changing work or social commitments. It also often means balancing promoting independence with providing support.
By helping families understand the condition and how it evolves, they can proactively prepare (for example, early discussions about what home-care might look like, understanding equipment needs, etc) rather than always reacting at crisis points.

What is Parkinsons Disease?

Parkinson’s is a long-term progressive neurological condition where certain nerve cells in the brain gradually lose their ability to produce dopamine, a chemical messenger important in controlling movement. Over time this leads to a range of motor and non-motor symptoms.
Some of the key features:

  • Tremor (often a shaking of a hand or limb when at rest)

  • Slowness of movement (bradykinesia)

  • Muscle stiffness or rigidity

  • Problems with balance and coordination

  • But also non-motor signs: changes in mood, cognition, sleep, speech and swallowing.

The exact cause is not fully understood; age is a major risk factor (most people develop it after age 65), but younger-onset cases also occur. It is important for readers to understand that while there is currently no cure, effective management (medication, therapy, lifestyle) and support can make a real difference in quality of life.

At Horizons Homecare we provide compassionate, specialised support that helps people with Parkinson’s live safely and independently at home while maintaining dignity and quality of life.

  • Consistent, trained carers
Clients receive care from familiar faces who understand their unique symptoms, routines and preferences. Our carers are trained in Parkinson’s awareness and always deliver full, unhurried visits.

  • Medication and mobility support
We assist with timely medication management, liaise with healthcare professionals when needed, and help clients move safely around their home, reducing fall risks and supporting independence.

  • Routine and wellbeing
Our carers encourage structure, meaningful activity, exercise and hydration, supporting both physical and emotional wellbeing.

  • Holistic, family-focused care
We recognise Parkinson’s affects more than movement. Our team monitors mood, sleep and cognition, adapts care plans as needs change, and offers families reassurance, communication and access to local support.

Through this tailored approach, Horizons Homecare enables people with Parkinson’s to continue living comfortably at home, supported by skilled, compassionate carers and informed families.

Three simple steps to using Horizons Homecare

1. Get in touch with us

Have a no obligation, confidential, conversation with one of our care experts to discuss your needs. We will ask questions about you or your loved ones and hopefully we will book the next stage.

Our core values...

The foundation of our success

Kindness

We believe that being truly kind isn't a skill, and it certainly isn't something you can learn. Being kind by nature is who you are!

Thats why we only employ, train and nurture those who are truly kind and caring towards other people. Not only does this belief form our recruitment process and decisions, it has become one of the foundations of our business.

Punctuality

We firmly believe that routines are what keep us as people, independent. Why should that change just because you require support at home?

Punctuality is another foundation of our business, and it means that when you become a client of Horizons, you will always know when your care team will be arriving. No more care workers being late, and no more missed visits.

Continuity

Something we have always been very eager to improve is the quite possibly the biggest 'flaw' in social care services today. Continuity...

After all, we wouldn't want our loved ones seeing a different person at every care visit, so why should you have to put up with it?

This is why you will have your very own team of care workers that really understand you and your routines. Your history, your family and your hobbies.

Family

The word family, encapsulates everything that we stand for, but unlike others who say they are a family run company. We truly are

From our HCAs to our clients, we are all one family striving for better outcomes and happier lives. This is why family is not only a core value, but the bricks and mortar we build the foundations on.
