Did you know?

How Strokes can affect a person living at home

Returning home after a stroke often marks the start of a new chapter with both opportunities and challenges for the individual and their loved ones. A person may face reduced mobility, problems with movement or coordination, fatigue, difficulty with tasks like dressing, cooking, using the bathroom or navigating the home environment. Memory or processing changes, speech or swallowing issues, and emotional shifts such as frustration, loss of identity or anxiety about the future may also emerge.

For families, loved ones and unpaid carers the journey often involves adapting the home (for example making spaces safer, installing aids, rearranging rooms), learning new ways to support activities, balancing the individual’s need for independence with their safety, managing medications and attending appointments. Relationships and roles may shift where a partner or friend may take on more of a carer role, while juggling their own responsibilities, health and personal life. Because the course of recovery can be unpredictable. Improvement, plateaus, occasional setbacks and the sense of “living with change” becomes part of everyday life.

Having a reliable homecare partner who understands stroke recovery, works with both the person and the family, and supports adaptation rather than just crisis response can make the difference between surviving and truly living at home.

What is a Stroke?

A stroke occurs when the blood supply to part of the brain is interrupted or reduced (ischaemic stroke) or when a blood vessel in the brain bursts (haemorrhagic stroke).
This disruption deprives brain cells of essential oxygen and nutrients, causing them to die or become permanently damaged.
The effects of a stroke depend on which part of the brain is affected and how long the interruption lasts; common consequences can include loss of movement or sensation on one side of the body, difficulty speaking or understanding, and problems with memory and balance.
Because the brain controls many aspects of daily living, even a moderate stroke may lead to long-term needs for support, rehabilitation and changes in how someone functions at home.

How we support people after a Stroke

At Horizons Homecare we know that living with the aftermath of a stroke is about more than physical recovery, it’s about reconnecting life, restoring lost routines and supporting relationships in the context of home. We begin by sitting down with the person and their family to understand their unique situation: the home environment, their goals, what mattered to them before the stroke, and how they envisage moving forward. We provide care teams trained in recognising stroke-related needs (mobility, speech, swallowing, cognition, emotional changes) and we ensure consistency so clients see familiar carers who build trust and understanding.
Our support includes helping with safe movement around the home, assistance with daily tasks tailored to the person’s pace, working alongside therapy and health professionals (with permission) to align with rehabilitation goals, helping review and adapt the home environment to maximise independence and minimise risk. We also provide emotional and social support by engaging the person in meaningful activities, supporting families with advice and communication, understanding the ripple effect of stroke on the household and ensuring that the care journey remains manageable and centred on the person’s dignity. Because we appreciate that needs change, we schedule regular reviews and remain flexible. Our focus is on enabling life at home, not simply providing visits. In this way Horizons Homecare helps stroke survivors and their families live together with confidence, respect and hope.

Three simple steps to using Horizons Homecare

1. Get in touch with us

Have a no obligation, confidential, conversation with one of our care experts to discuss your needs. We will ask questions about you or your loved ones and hopefully we will book the next stage.

Our core values...

The foundation of our success

Kindness

We believe that being truly kind isn't a skill, and it certainly isn't something you can learn. Being kind by nature is who you are!

Thats why we only employ, train and nurture those who are truly kind and caring towards other people. Not only does this belief form our recruitment process and decisions, it has become one of the foundations of our business.

Punctuality

We firmly believe that routines are what keep us as people, independent. Why should that change just because you require support at home?

Punctuality is another foundation of our business, and it means that when you become a client of Horizons, you will always know when your care team will be arriving. No more care workers being late, and no more missed visits.

Continuity

Something we have always been very eager to improve is the quite possibly the biggest 'flaw' in social care services today. Continuity...

After all, we wouldn't want our loved ones seeing a different person at every care visit, so why should you have to put up with it?

This is why you will have your very own team of care workers that really understand you and your routines. Your history, your family and your hobbies.

Family

The word family, encapsulates everything that we stand for, but unlike others who say they are a family run company. We truly are

From our HCAs to our clients, we are all one family striving for better outcomes and happier lives. This is why family is not only a core value, but the bricks and mortar we build the foundations on.
